How Dry Eye Disease Develops & How to Treat It

man with dry eye sneeze

Dry eye disease is an increasingly common eye condition that can happen either because the eye is not producing enough tears, or because tears are evaporating too quickly, leaving the eyes without enough moisture to function comfortably.

This can happen for several reasons including allergies, side effects from medications, hormonal changes, and illness.

Depending on the cause and exact symptoms of your dry eyes, our Lakewood Hills eye doctors will be able to prescribe treatments and medications aimed at increasing the amount of tears your eye produces and/or slowing the evaporation of tears to better hydrate your eyes.

What Are the Main Causes of Dry Eye?

  • Aging

Dry eye disease tends to affect people over the age of 50. This is because tear production slows as we age. As the lacrimal glands produce fewer tears, dry eye develops.

  • Hormonal changes

It's not uncommon for some women to experience dry eye symptoms during pregnancy, menopause, or while using birth control pills. That's because hormone imbalances can reduce tear production.

  • Autoimmune disease

Certain autoimmune diseases, like Sjรถgrenโ€™s syndrome, can cause white blood cells to attack your tear glands, thus reducing tear production. Other diseases like arthritis, lupus, and diabetes can also cause poor or insufficient tear production.

  • Medications

Certain medications can reduce mucus production (one of the 3 tear components) thus contributing to chronic dry eye.

They include antihistamines, antidepressants, diuretics, and beta-blockers.

Note that this is just a handful of causes. There are many other factors that can contribute to dry eye, including pollution and dry air, allergies, poor tear quality, dehydration, contact lens wear, and more.

Dry Eyes FAQs

Can I still wear contact lenses if I have dry eye syndrome?

Yes, some people can still wear contact lenses with dry eye syndrome. However, depending on its severity, you may need to carefully select the adequate contact lens for optimal clarity and comfort.

Oftentimes, because contact lenses sit on the eye, it's difficult for vital oxygen to reach the eye. This can worsen dry eye symptoms, and increase the risk of scratching or otherwise damaging your eye. Make sure to ask your eye doctor which contact lenses are most adapted to your condition.

Can dry eye syndrome be cured?

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for dry eye syndrome. There are, however, many treatment options that offer lasting dry eye relief.

Can dry eye syndrome cause blindness?

In rare extreme cases, dry eye syndrome can cause corneal ulcers. These ulcers can result in scarring on the eye, making it difficult for the cornea to focus light accurately. If left untreated, corneal ulcers and the associated scarring can result in blindness.

How can I prevent dry eye symptoms?

Below are a few tips that will help prevent dry eye symptoms:

  • Point fans, heaters, and air vents so that they donโ€™t directly blow into your eyes
  • Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids
  • Stay properly hydrated
  • Take breaks during long tasks, especially those that require extended visual focus

I've been going to Eyeworks for years and always had a good experience. This time, I had a great exp... erience, mainly because of Ashley. We had to sort out my insurance, which she did, and then new glasses which she did brilliantly, making it affordable for me to get me the glasses I wanted. She was knowledgeable, attentive and kind. Great job Ashley!

Guess what: no "Poof Test" here! They user newer tech instead! ๐Ÿ™‚ I love all of the staff at Dallas... Eye Works, they treated me so kindly and went out of their way more than once to make sure I was accommodated, as well as help me get the most out of my insurance & budget. Dr. Clint is very thorough, takes the time to explain things in detail and share his insight & anecdotes. When I had a concern about my prescription in 1 eye, they got me in immediately for a follow up and made an adjustment to the rx. Historically I've been a contact lens abuser and at no time did any of the staff make me feel ashamed or embarrassed coming in with horrible defaced lenses, they only offered their help & suggestions and were all lovely to work with. The Tech (whose name I forgot to ask) gave me wonderful advice on soothing dry eyes and trying a "deep clean" solution for contacts occasionally. Courtney was an angel letting me try on probably every pair of frames in the building and giving her feedback to help me narrow down my selection. I can't speak highly enough about their whole crew, this is the only place I'll go now as long as I'm in the Dallas area. Thank you all!

The staff is super friendly, welcoming, and extremely helpful. One staff member in specific is Ashle... y. Sheโ€™s awesome in assisting with helping choose glasses and frames that look well. She goes above and beyond in assisting with all questions and explains so much in detail. I appreciated her patience and willingness to explain all my options and how my insurance worked. On top of it all she had a great attitude from the moment I met with her.

Dr. Wang and the team are wonderful! Kind, welcoming, informative, and thorough. Super easy to sched... ule online and upload paperwork. Walked me through every step of the process, and did not make me feel pressured to purchase any contacts or frames in the moment. Amazing place. Dr Meyer, Hannah and Chase are all rockstars. Dr. Meyer made the process so easy that... I had almost no questions afterwards. Hannah was super thorough and made sure that the pre exam was done to perfection. Chase was right on point with suggestions and made the frame selection painless with no pressure (something super very unusual nowadays). Yupโ€ฆ this is my place from now on when it comes to eye care. God bless you guys.
